Graphene Shakes Things up for Fuel Cells


The promise for nanomaterials in fuel cells has been a bit lackluster, until the latest discoveries of graphene’s potential


There are two main issues that have hampered the prospects of fuel cells for the powering of automobiles: the costs of isolating hydrogen and building an infrastructure that would deliver that hydrogen to the automobiles. 


In what may be one of the most significant contributions of nanomaterials to the potential of the so-called hydrogen economy, researchers at the University of Manchester, led by Nobel Laureate Andre Geim, have shown that the one-atom-thick materials graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), once thought to be impermeable, allow protons to pass through them.



New Production Methods for Two-Dimensional Materials Emerge


Research in 2D materials takes a turn towards manufacturing and away from just characterization


Researchers at Rice University, led by James Tour, whose work we highlighted in our graphene for fuel cells story, have developed a simple method for producing flexible films made from MoS2 that orients the material on its sides. In other words, they made the material in such a way that exposes the maximum amount of its edges.

Graphene Continues Making Inroads Into Electronics


Lacking an inherent band gap is not slowing research into using graphene for electronic applications


When people look at the extraordinary properties of graphene to be a conductor, it’s hard for them to let go of the idea of using it for anything other than digital electronic applications despite it lacking an inherent band gap.


While graphene’s extraordinary electronic properties may not lend themselves to the “0” and “1” of binary electronic applications, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be used for a variety of other electronic applications outside of digital electronics.

Bulk Graphene Pricing Report 2015

Updated and Expanded with current price trends!

The 2015 edition, replacing the report from 2014, is a detailed report on the current pricing of bulk graphene materials which encompass the various commercial grades of nano-to-micron scale flake graphene or “platelets” as opposed to continuous monolayer films. 

Bulk graphene materials have wide reaching applications for large-scale use as an industrial commodity. As such, understanding price drivers and gaining accurate pricing information is critical for successfully exploiting graphene as either a producer or end-user of the material.
